Pretty Smart Labs

Who we are

We put intelligence on
small hardware before
it was a category.

Pretty Smart Labs is an AI native product engineering studio. Since 2007 we have taken connected devices from firmware to cloud to app, and we have spent most of that time working a few years ahead of what the silicon was ready for.

The pattern

2016

Twelve channel hearing augmentation, designed before the silicon to run it existed.

2018

Parkinson's wearables with Not Impossible Labs, demoed at the Parkinson's ride that September.

2020

Tremor detection running as machine learning on a milliwatt sensor node, weeks before the pandemic.

2022

Haptic suits letting deaf fans feel a live match in the stadium.

2026

A vision model on the sensor die of a camera hosted by a Bluetooth LE microcontroller.

Each of those was early enough to be argued with at the time. That is the work we like, and it is why clients bring us the part of the product nobody else will quote on.

How we work

We work as a partner, not a vendor. Expect direct access to the engineers doing the work, honest timelines, and taste about what to ship versus what to leave out.

We build our own products too. The latest is psvision, an AI camera that runs on a Bluetooth LE microcontroller. Building for ourselves is how we stay honest about what ships.

The hard parts are the parts we like.
You are always doing things before the market. I like it.
Don Janysek, the field engineer who has worked with us since 2015, now Senior Staff FAE at Nordic Semiconductor, in a 2016 email. Still our favorite review.

On the record

Patent

Patent pending

First named inventor on a pending US patent application for treating tremor through vibrotactile stimulation driven by physiological data, filed with Not Impossible.

Standards

ITU-T contribution, 2017

A contribution to the international standard for biosignal data formats, out of our telemedicine work.

Partners

Nordic and Avnet AVID

On Nordic silicon since 2014. Nordic’s own field engineers keep sending us the programs that have stalled, which is the hardest referral to earn in this industry.
